Top Tips For Ski Trips with Babies

Babies can happily sit and watch the world go by on a beach holiday but it takes a bit more preparation to plan a ski trip. Soon they'll be on hurtling down the nursery slopes but in the meantime you need to take care of their needs whilst packing in some valuable snow time of your own!

Do your research. It's not the same as heading to Spain, slapping on sunscreen and heading for the sand. Until baby can ski you need to plan ahead and sort child care as sitting around in the cold isn't much fun for anyone. Before booking your holiday check what's available at the resort as there are loads of options including child friendly lodges and all-inclusive chalets with child-care included in the cost.

Sharing the childcare with your partner or even better a group of friends will keep costs down and allow you to be hands-on with baby duty. So that you don't waste half a day of your ski pass baby sitting why not mix it up and rent a sled that attaches to your waist and pull them along at a safe pace - make sure they are well covered as a cold baby = crabby!

Don't pack the buggy as they can be more of a nuisance than a help around snowy (higher) resorts so opt instead for a backpack carrier or a buggy with jogger/large wheels. Careful sourcing of child-friendly accommodation will mean you don't have to pack a lots of heavy extras such as a travel cot and will provide plenty of thoughtful touches for tired out parents.

Don't forget to pack special sun cream to protect sensitive young skin and good quality sunglasses if baby is spending time on the slopes. Be sure to keep babies under 6 months out of the sun completely using wide brimmed hats and sun shades as mountain rays can be fierce.

Wrap up! Babies need plenty of layers as they aren't moving and keeping the cold at bay so that means vests, fleeces, snowsuit, hat, gloves - and if you do bring a buggy make sure you take an extra warm foot muff.

Above all have fun and be sure to make lots of memories!
